The Blitz began on 7 September 1940 when London was attacked by 350 bombers, escorted by 600 fighters. The air raid started at 5.00pm and lasted for almost 12 hours; 430 Londoners were killed and 1,600 injured during that first night of bombing. London was then bombed for 57 consecutive nights, but the Blitz continued throughout Britain until May 1941.
